Priority Enrollment

Military-affiliated priority enrollment is available to qualifying active-duty service members, National Guard members, Reservists, and veterans who meet the requirements established by California Education Code § 66025.8.

Military-Affiliated Priority Enrollment Information

Veterans and service members using VA education benefits at UCLA are automatically assigned military-affiliated priority enrollment when eligibility is verified through the UCLA VA Benefits Office. Information about activating and using VA education benefits at UCLA can be found through the Education Benefits Submission Process.

If you are a veteran, active-duty service member, National Guard member, or Reservist and plan to use VA education benefits at UCLA, you do not need to submit a separate priority enrollment request.

This documentation process is intended for students who:

  • Qualify for military-affiliated priority enrollment but do not plan to use VA education benefits at UCLA
  • Have qualifying military service but are not currently receiving VA education benefits
  • Need to establish military-affiliated priority enrollment through documentation review

Who Qualifies?

Military-affiliated priority enrollment is generally available to:

  • Active-duty service members
  • National Guard members serving under qualifying orders
  • Reservists serving under qualifying orders
  • Veterans

Eligibility is subject to applicable state law and university policy.

Required Documentation

Acceptable documentation depends on your current military status.

Veterans

A DD-214 is required (member 4 copy)

Current Active-Duty Service Members, National Guard Members, and Reservists

If you do not have a DD-214 because you are currently serving, you may submit one of the following:

  • A letter from your current command on official command letterhead
  • Active Duty Orders (Title 10)
  • Full-Time National Guard Duty Orders (Title 32)State Active Duty (SAD) Orders

The Following Documents Are Not Accepted

  • Permanent Change of Station (PCS) Orders
  • Travel Orders

Documentation must establish qualifying active-duty military service, National Guard service, Reserve service, or veteran status under California Education Code § 66025.8.

Who Does Not Qualify Based on Military Affiliation Alone?

Military-affiliated priority enrollment is based on qualifying military service. The following categories do not independently qualify for military-affiliated priority enrollment:

  • ROTC participation, including contracted ROTC status
  • Child or dependent of a veteran or service member
  • Spouse of a veteran or service member
  • Military affiliation without qualifying military service

While some ROTC students may possess military identification or participate in military training programs, ROTC participation alone does not establish qualifying military service for purposes of military-affiliated priority enrollment.

Other Priority Enrollment Categories at UCLA

Military-affiliated priority enrollment is only one of several priority enrollment categories available at UCLA. Students may also qualify for priority enrollment through other campus programs and student populations, including:

  • Student parents or students with dependents
  • Former foster youth
  • Students experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity
  • Regents Scholars
  • Students with documented disabilities receiving accommodations through the Center for Accessible Education (CAE)
  • Intercollegiate student-athletes
  • Other university-approved priority enrollment programs

Students seeking priority enrollment through one of these categories should contact the appropriate campus office responsible for that program.

New Students

Priority enrollment is not available during a student's first academic term at UCLA.

For example, a new student entering UCLA in Fall Quarter who submits documentation before classes begin will not receive military-affiliated priority enrollment until Winter Quarter.

Submit a Priority Enrollment Request

If you have qualifying military service and are not already being reviewed through the UCLA VA education benefits process, you may submit a Priority Enrollment Request for documentation review: https://sa.ucla.edu/forms/p/uclamilitaryverification
